Adding Blood Thinners Increases the Risk for Internal Bleeding

Two drugs are not always better than one when
it comes to using blood thinners to treat clogged
arteries in the legs, U.S. researchers reported
on Wednesday.

They found that adding a blood thinner such as
warfarin to daily clot-preventing drugs such as
aspirin is no better -- and sometimes more dangerous --
for preventing heart attacks, strokes and other
circulatory problems in people with peripheral
artery disease.

About 1 in 16 people over 40 have some degree of
clogging in the arteries outside their heart.
The 8.5 million in the United States who do face
a higher risk of death from heart disease.

Because blood thinners are used to treat clots
that develop from acidic lifestyles and diets,
researchers thought adding them to the mix might
cut the risk further.

The new study in the New England Journal of
Medicine shows that such hopes are unfounded.

Results from 2,161 volunteers treated at 80
medical centers in seven countries demonstrate
that adding the second drug had virtually no
effect on the risk of heart attack, stroke, a
severe clot outside the heart, or death from
any type of heart disease.

The rates were 15.9 percent in the combination
group and 17.4 percent in the antiplatelet-only
group, an insignificant difference.

In fact, 4 percent of the people getting
combination therapy suffered life-threatening
bleeding, compared with just 1.2 percent getting
an antiplatelet drug.

"Treating 1,000 patients with combination therapy
as compared with antiplatelet therapy alone for
three years would lead to 24 fewer cardiovascular
events but 28 more episodes of life-threatening
bleeding, resulting in a net increase in serious
adverse outcomes," said the research team, led by
Sonia Anand of McMaster University in Hamilton,
Ontario.

The real solution to life-threatening bleeding
is to eliminate the acidic contributors from
lifestyle and diet choices that are breaking

Today is July 17, 2007 and I am excited to share
a story about raising alkaline kids with all of
your friends and family.

Almost 10 months ago our son "A" came into our home
from Guatemala and then our son "J" followed shortly
after him. "A" is 19 moths old now and "J" is
3 yrs old. Neither had a great start in life and
we are positive the lack of nutrition caused them
both to have several issues with their skin,
bowels and behavior.

The moment we met both boys over a year ago, we
gave them some green juices and they both loved
them! "A" was too little at the time to ask for
more - but he would drink almost 9 oz. whenever
we offered it to him. "J" couldn't get enough
and his little body would eliminate so much toxic

"A" came home with what some diagnosed as eczema,

It was not attractive and all over his body - his

to raw coconut milk, to hempseed milk. None of them can
tolerate even the smallest amount of dairy in a dish -
it just goes to show you how we are not made to drink or
eat dairy!

You see it doesn't matter when you start with your
children down the path of alkalizing them, just that
you start. They will all learn to love it - because
nothing taste as good, as good health feels.

I often think what kind of legacy will we leave behind -
our hope is that our children will give back more than
they take, live for God and love all those they meet.

I hope this encourages others to not just seek health
for themselves, but for their children, grandchildren,
nieces, nephews, students, and neighbors. We can change
lives - one at a time. The goal is not perfect eating,
but learning to make more good choices every time you
eat or drink.

Children should not and cannot be expected to make the
right choices for themselves, thus they need all of us
to help them until the day they are ready for such an
awesome responsibility...living disease free!

Reports of Diabetes Drug Acidic Side Effects Triple

In the month after a surprising analysis
revealed possible heart risks from the
blockbuster diabetes drug Avandia, reports
of side effects to federal regulators tripled.

The sudden spike is a sign that doctors
probably were unaware of the drug's possible
role in their patients' heart problems and
therefore may not have reported many such
cases in the past, several experts said.

It also shows the flaws of the safety tracking
system and suggests that a better one might
have detected a potential problem before the
drug had been on the market for eight years.

Avandia is used to control blood sugar, helping
more than 6 million people worldwide manage
Type 2 diabetes, the kind that is linked to
obesity. These people already are at higher
risk for heart attacks, so news that the drug
might raise this risk by 43 percent was
especially disturbing.

In the 35 days after May 21, when the New
England Journal of Medicine published the
analysis on the Internet, reports of heart
attacks, deaths and hospitalizations leaped.

The sharp rise in reports of heart problems
appears in data obtained by The Associated
Press through a Freedom of Information Act
request to the federal Food and Drug
Administration.

Only five heart attacks were reported in the
35 days before the study, compared with 90 in
the same period afterward. Heart-related
hospitalizations went from 11 to 126. The
reports involve rosiglitazone, sold as Avandia
and Avandamet.

Reporting a drug's side effects is voluntary,
and only a crude indication rather than a
scientific measure of how many problems patients
are actually having. The FDA relies on this
unenforced system once a drug is on the market.

Critics say it leads to haphazard oversight in
which problems can be missed because doctors
don't connect the dots between a drug and
symptoms they see in an individual patient.

With Avandia, the published analysis likely
led to more cases being reported, said
Vanderbilt University diabetes specialist
Dr. Alvin C. Powers.

"Now, patients and their doctors are much
more aware of the possible link between
Avandia and cardiovascular disease. This is
good - this is going to help us going forward
to determine whether or not this drug is safe,"
he said.

The drug's manufacturer, British-based
GlaxoSmithKline PLC, insists that the drug is
safe and effective.

"This is a very well-known phenomenon," where
news reports lead to increased reporting, said
company spokeswoman Mary Anne Rhyne. "It's good
that there's awareness of the reporting system,
but drawing conclusions on such data is
inappropriate."

The FDA plans hearings on safety concerns about
the drug on July 30. In the meantime, diabetes
experts have advised users of the medication to
talk to their doctors and not to immediately
discontinue it.

The side effects reported range from as minor
as a blister to as serious as sudden cardiac
death. Most of the reports the AP reviewed
seemed to involve serious side effects, and
rosiglitazone was listed by the FDA as the
"primary suspect" rather than other medicines
the patient may have been taking.

Avandia's label warns about possible heart
failure and other heart problems when taken
with insulin. The drug also raises LDL, or
bad cholesterol, and can cause fluid retention
and weight gain.

The Three Step Cataract Protection Plan

especially in youth, is very elastic and can
change its shape to see things that are either
